A guiding principle of our work is that of food justice for all. But what does food have to do with justice? When we peel back the layers of our food systems, we see that important questions arise that relate directly to inequities of accessibility, health, and environmental justice.
We live out our commitment to food justice in many ways, supporting our farmers and valuing their skill and dedication; caring for the land in a sustainable way; and ensuring that our produce is accessible to all social and economic backgrounds.
Concretely put, we:
- Compensate our lead farmers with a living wage and health benefits
- Provide affordable organic fruits and vegetables to farmworker families living in food-insecure areas of Ventura County through our Solidarity Shares Program
- Donate excess harvest to local food banks and faith-based organizations for distribution in food-insecure areas of Ventura County
We uphold the principles of food justice because when people practice food justice it leads to a stronger local food system, self-reliant communities, and a healthier environment. Above all, as we grow and learn, we are committed to continuing to ask ourselves the hard questions about food justice, and continue transforming our work to fit our values.
