FARM TO SCHOOL

F2S Logo Mackenzie‘Farm to school’ refers to a national movement that connects schools with local farmers and food processors in order to serve more locally grown, nutrient-rich and tasty foods in school cafeterias. Farm to school programs also include food, agriculture and nutrition-based education that includes standards-based curriculum and a host of hands-on experiential activities, such as school gardens, farm field trips, and cooking classes.

The Abundant Table’s Join the Farm! program is proud to contribute to the improved health of our community’s children by collaborating with the Ventura, Conejo Valley and Los Angeles Unified School Districts in their commitment to bring more locally sourced, fresh fruits and vegetables to school lunches and interactive, scientifically-based nutrition education to the classroom.  Our Join the Farm! program:

  • Provides “Farmer in the Classroom” agricultural and nutrition education to approximately 1000 K-12 students annually;
  • Grows and harvest over 700 lbs. of carrots and other vegetables each week for local school lunch programs—in VUSD, 17,000 students enjoy our produce;
  • Prioritizes schools where at least half of students are eligible for federally supported free and reduced price meals.
