New roots at McGrath Family Farms

Dear Friends,

Summer is fully upon us: The days are longer, the sun a bit brighter, and exciting things are afoot and afield at The Abundant Table!  But which field? It is with great excitement that I share with our CSA community that after three years tilling the soil with pride at the Hansen Agricultural Research and Education Center in Santa Paula, we will be laying new roots at McGrath Family Farms  in Camarillo on July 1st.

At The Abundant Table we have always grown your food ethically, using sustainable and organic principles, and we are thrilled that our move to McGrath will confer certified organic status to our CSAprogram and moreover, that we will be working alongside the remarkable Phil McGrath , who shares our values and beliefs in growing local, organic food and the importance of agricultural education and preserving agricultural land in our county. The Abundant Table Board of Directors, its staff and myself are honored that we will be working the land of one of the oldest and most established farming families in the county, which has been on the Oxnard Plain since 1868.  Now those are some deep roots!

With the move come promising opportunities to expand our Join the Farm! operations to five acres, enabling us to grow more produce for Ventura County’s school children and you (!); enhance our already stellar Farm Education program run by Erynn Smith; and to engage our CSA community and the public with family-friendly U-pick produce days, nutrition workshops, and events on the farm.  Fun times are definitely ahead!

Yet with transition there are always bumps along the way.  Cucumber and melon vines continue to sprawl across the rows and fruit ripens in the sun at our farm in Santa Paula, while we are concurrently preparing new beds in Camarillo to plant the first of the winter squashes.

We ask our CSA community for their understanding and support during this time of transition. To help fund the costs of transitioning the farm and some upgrades (did we mention our poor van was stolen and vandalized last month?) we will be hosting our first kick-off Farm-to-Table dinner event in our new home on August 29, 2015-so save the date!  And in the meantime you can make a tax-deductible donation to help your farm flourish and grow.

We hope that you, our dedicated CSA community, share in our joy for this next chapter for The Abundant Table.

Happy eating!
